Our Mission
We aim to serve JMU families through love, support, and honest education regarding abortion. Our top priority in any given situation is to protect children, support mothers and fathers, and love them all.
"Abortion is profoundly anti-women. Three-quarters of its victims are women: Half the babies and all the mothers.”

Conception - Week 2 : the germinal stage
After the egg is fertilized, the newly conceived baby is called a zygote. After fertilization, the zygote makes his/her way down to the uterus, rapidly dividing his/her cells. This cell division continues until the baby reaches the developmental stage in which he/she is called a blastocyst. At this stage, the child arrives in the uterus. Once the child is successfully implanted in the lining of the uterus, the child moves onto the next developmental stage.
weeks 3-8 : the embryonic stage
In this stage, the baby, at this point referred to as a blastocyst, begins to take on distinct characteristics, and starts to look like what you think when you hear the word "baby." His/her internal structures and organs begin to develop. The baby's heart begins to beat around week 5 or 6. By the end of the 8th week, most of the child's organs will have taken shape. This is typically when morning sickness begins for mothers who experience it.
What Is Happening During Pregnancy?
Week 9 - Birth : the fetal stage
This is the stage when the child is now referred to as a fetus. Around week 9 of pregnancy, the fetus develops his/her sexual characteristics, although they won't be visible on an ultrasound until later on. The baby's major organs continue to grow and develop, becoming more complex and independent. Characteristics of the baby, such as his/her eyelashes, fingernails, and hair start to grow during this stage. Additionally, the child will be able to move his/her limbs, although a pregnant woman probably won't be able to feel those movements until about week 20. The majority of the growth of the baby happens during this stage.

Why is this fight necessary at JMU?
There are many people at JMU who do not have access to honest and accurate information regarding what abortion is, the side effects of abortion procedures or medications, and the alternatives to abortion.
We want to help mothers and fathers at JMU understand how precious their children are, and how much support they have available to help them through new parenthood.
If you are unexpectedly pregnant and seeking help during your pregnancy, please contact AvaCare Harrisonburg at https://avacareforyou.org/ and schedule a private appointment.
If you would like to help us fight for JMU families, please join our email list. If you would like help with your pregnancy, or with childcare support, please feel free contact us at dukesforlifejmu@gmail.com.
Abortion isn't your only option.
Abortion only hurts those involved.
Human life begins at conception. All humans have the right to live, even very small ones. We fight to end abortion because we believe that every life matters.

“Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use violence to get what they want. That is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.”
